"Naval Yard, the growing importance of which Yard he fully "recognises, he is prepared to abandon the Praya scheme, in "condition that Their Lordships will consent, in connection

"with the scheme for the extension of the Yard, to arrange

"for widening, without cost to the Colony, the existing road-

"way, from Murray Pier to the Blue Buildings, including the

"road on the west side of North Barracks, and Queen's Road

"for the whole length of the Military & Naval Buildings, & "Sharp's Buildings, and the road on the east side of the "Ordnance Store to the junction with the existing Eastern "Praya, to a total width (including footpaths) of 75 feet, "which is the width of the new Praya Road."

The Admiralty in Letter to Colonial Office 15th. June 1899

remarked -

"With reference to the remarks of H.E. the Governor on the "subject of the rights of the Colonial Government to the "foreshore and land under the sea, My Lords are glad to "observe that the view that the Admiralty should be in any "way restricted in the use of the foreshore and the sea bed "in front of the property forming the Naval Establishments "is not endorsed by the Secretary of State; but My Lords "feel it necessary to point out that whatever the rights of "the Colony may have been, they were clearly acquired by the "Admiralty as part of the arrangement under which the Admir- "alty agreed to carry out at their own expense the widening "of the Queen's Road from Murray Pier Road to Arsenal Street"

A compromise was therefore arrived at, and this special case was settled without any definite ruling as to the rights of the Admiralty and the Colony.
